Deep dive: Project Rainier: Amazon's Anthropic cluster
Operated by Amazon at AWS Project Rainier (St. Joseph County, Indiana) .
Phase 1 seed dataset, compiled by hand. These rows were built from public operator, laboratory and vendor sources. A mechanical second-reader pass has since fetched every cited source: 1092 of 1153 systems have a readable citation that names them, and 40 are genuinely weakly sourced. Every claim carries its source and a confidence tier. Treat anything below verified as a lead, not a citation.

Figures are as last publicly reported for the configuration described below, not a live measurement. Where a system was upgraded in place, the post-upgrade configuration is shown and the earlier one appears in the timeline.
What this machine is made of
One row per supplier relationship. “Supplier at build” is the company that shipped the part at the time; where that company has since been acquired, the parent it rolls up to today is shown beside it. That distinction is what makes ticker-level aggregation possible across a thirty-year dataset.

| Metric | Value | As of | Basis | Note | Source |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Accelerators | 1,044,980 accelerators | 2026-03-23 | Third-party estimate | Epoch AI chip estimate, latest per chip type (Trainium2); some rows are company disclosures, others modelled. Amazon stated nearly 500,000 in Oct 2025. | epoch.ai |
| Accelerators | 1,000,000 accelerators | 2025-12 | Design target | Amazon: more than 1 million Trainium2 chips targeted by end of 2025 for training and inference; floor value | aboutamazon.com |
| Accelerators | 500,000 accelerators | 2025-10 | Operator stated | Amazon: nearly half a million Trainium2 chips (value rounded up); spread over several US data centers including St. Joseph County, Indiana | aboutamazon.com |
| Stated investment | 11 USD bn | 2024-04 | Operator stated | Announced AWS investment for the New Carlisle, Indiana campus (16 shells), the Rainier site in St. Joseph County; campus total, not cluster only | constructiondive.cominsideindianabusiness.com |

|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Utility gas plant | NiSource | - | permitted | 2026-06 | Regulatory filing | IURC approved on 17 Jun 2026 the Amazon contract, PPA and NIPSCO combined-cycle gas resources. Release says northern Indiana; the link to Rainier is inferred. | nisource.comnisource.com |
| Battery storage | NiSource | - | permitted | 2026-06 | Regulatory filing | IURC also approved NIPSCO battery storage for the Amazon agreement on 17 Jun 2026. Release does not name the campus; link to Rainier is inferred. No MW stated. | nisource.comnisource.com |

The read
An AWS cluster built with and used by Anthropic, described by Amazon as nearly half a million Trainium2 chips, fully operational as of the 29 October 2025 update to its own page. St. Joseph County, Indiana is named as one of several Rainier sites, so the site is only partly disclosed and carries no map coordinates. Amazon states no exact chip count, announcement date, power or FLOPS, and Anthropic's own pages do not mention Rainier, so every fact here rests on Amazon alone. Amazon's 2.4 GW Indiana figure belongs to a separate later project and is not attributed to Rainier.

- AWS activates Project Rainier, a nearly 500,000-chip Trainium2 cluster for Anthropic · About AmazonRainier is the largest non-NVIDIA training deployment in this dataset by chip count and the clearest evidence yet that a hyperscaler's own silicon, not merchant GPUs, can anchor a frontier model training run. AWS says Anthropic is headed toward more than 1 million Trainium2 chips by year end, which would make this entry's chip count stale within months rather than years.
