Deep dive: Project Rainier: Amazon's Anthropic cluster

Also known as AWS Canton Mississippi

Operated by Amazon at AWS Canton Madison Mega Site .

Phase 1 seed dataset, compiled by hand. These rows were built from public operator, laboratory and vendor sources. A mechanical second-reader pass has since fetched every cited source: 1092 of 1153 systems have a readable citation that names them, and 40 are genuinely weakly sourced. Every claim carries its source and a confidence tier. Treat anything below verified as a lead, not a citation.

What this machine is made of

One row per supplier relationship. “Supplier at build” is the company that shipped the part at the time; where that company has since been acquired, the parent it rolls up to today is shown beside it. That distinction is what makes ticker-level aggregation possible across a thirty-year dataset.

How AI campuses are powered: capacities are what the operator, utility or filing states, not what has been delivered.

The read

Amazon Web Services' Canton campus on and beside the Madison County Mega Site in Mississippi, one of two Madison County AWS campuses with Ridgeland. Mississippi's economic development agency announced on 9 April 2026 a further 11 billion dollars for Madison County, on top of the 10 billion dollars announced in 2024, and framed it around generative and agentic AI, with Entergy Mississippi power as a stated factor; the page gives no per-campus hardware or MW. Epoch AI's AI data centers dataset (CC BY 4.0) estimates about 326,600 Trainium2 chips and 284 MW of IT power as of 2 October 2026, with buildings 1 to 5 operational by June 2025, from an air construction permit and satellite imagery. Epoch labels a link to Anthropic and Project Rainier as speculative, so this row is not tied to the existing Project Rainier row. Epoch's figures are modelled estimates in the metrics table only. Hardware rests on Epoch alone, so the tier is reported.

We fetched this system's own citations and recorded whether each page actually mentions it. This is a corroboration signal, not a fact check, and it is published so you can see how well the sourcing holds up rather than take it on trust.
