CentOS

Community rebuild of Red Hat Enterprise Linux's source packages, binary-compatible and free. Common on HPC clusters through the late 2010s.

Why this part

Not the same part as Red Hat Enterprise Linux, even though several of the systems that ran it are described in secondary sources as running a "Red Hat family" OS. CentOS rebuilt RHEL's own published source packages without the subscription, which made it a common default on academic and national HPC clusters that wanted RHEL's binary compatibility without paying for RHEL's support contract, until Red Hat ended that model in December 2020 by converting CentOS into a rolling preview of RHEL's next release rather than a downstream rebuild of the current one. Several systems in this dataset migrated off CentOS to Rocky Linux, one of the direct community successors built specifically to replace the rebuild model CentOS abandoned, within two to three years of that announcement.

“Units recorded” sums only the edges where a public source states a quantity. It is a floor, not a total, and should never be read as installed base.
