Parts/Operating systems/IBM AIX
Why this part
The one operating system in this dataset older than most of the machines that run it: AIX shipped in 1986, and ASCI White ran a mature commercial product rather than anything built for the machine. That is the opposite choice from BlueGene's purpose-built CNK two generations later. White was three separate clusters sharing one SP fabric, White itself plus the smaller Ice and Frost systems, and running a standard, already-supported Unix across all of them let LLNL operate three machines with one software organisation rather than three. IBM discontinued general availability of new AIX-based HPC systems well before the accelerator era made the question moot; nothing later in this dataset runs it.

“Units recorded” sums only the edges where a public source states a quantity. It is a floor, not a total, and should never be read as installed base.
