Why this part
The most widely deployed storage in this dataset: Frontier, El Capitan, Aurora, LUMI, Alps, Perlmutter, ARCHER2 and Shaheen III all run it. Orion, Frontier's instance, is 700 PB across three tiers, and the tiering is the interesting part. A checkpoint is a burst of writes from every node at once, followed by hours of nothing, so the flash tier absorbs the burst and drains to disk afterwards. Sizing storage for the burst rather than the average is what makes the economics work, and it is the same reasoning that put burst buffers into Trinity a decade ago.
