Finis Terrae

Also known as FinisTerrae; CESGA Finis Terrae (2007)

Operated by CESGA at CESGA (Santiago de Compostela) .

Researched with AI assistance, checked by scripts. These rows were researched by AI agents reading public operator, laboratory and vendor sources, appended by scripts and checked by automated validation; no subject-matter expert has reviewed them (how this site is made). A mechanical second-reader pass has since fetched every cited source: 1350 of 1540 systems have a readable citation that names them, and 64 are genuinely weakly sourced. Every claim carries its source and a confidence tier. Treat anything below verified as a lead, not a citation.

What this machine is made of

One row per supplier relationship. “Supplier at build” is the company that shipped the part at the time; where that company has since been acquired, the parent it rolls up to today is shown beside it. That distinction is what makes ticker-level aggregation possible across a thirty-year dataset.

The read

Itanium 2 shared-memory cluster at CESGA in Galicia, deployed by HP with Intel. HP's description calls it one of the largest Itanium-based shared-memory supercomputers, built from 142 HP Integrity rx7640 nodes of 16 cores each plus Superdome servers, with 1.3 TB of main memory on the Superdomes, an accumulated shared memory space of 19 TB across the rx7640 nodes, InfiniBand between all nodes, and 390 TB of disk plus 1 PB of tape. A two-week acceptance test used half the system for 350,000 calculation hours. TOP500 carries it twice: the November 2007 entry (system 175541, rx7640/Superdome, 2,400 cores, 12.97 TFlop/s Rmax, 15.36 peak, ranked 101st) and a 2008 entry (system 175803, labelled rx5670, 2,528 cores of 1.6 GHz Montecito, 14.01 TFlop/s Rmax, 16.18 peak, ranked 210th in June 2008 and 427th in November 2008). The 2008 figures are recorded because they come from the later and larger run; the rx5670 versus rx7640 label difference is TOP500's and is not explained there. The HP page gives no total core count, deployment date or peak. Successor machine in the dataset: finisterrae-ii.

Source check

We fetched this system's own citations and recorded whether each page actually mentions it. This is a corroboration signal, not a fact check, and it is published so you can see how well the sourcing holds up rather than take it on trust.
