IBM Quantum System Two (CSCS Lugano)
IBM Quantum System Two (CSCS Lugano) is a superconducting circuits quantum computer operated by IBM in Switzerland. It has 120 physical qubits. It ranks 21 of 74 superconducting machines in this table by physical qubit count. 3 sourced specs are in the spec sheet. No benchmark figures are recorded for it yet.
Also known as Swiss IBM Quantum System Two
Announced on 10 September 2026 as Switzerland's first System Two, born of an IBM and Lockheed Martin offset agreement with armasuisse and anchored at ETH Zurich, which acts as academic lead and coordinates access. It is scheduled for installation by late 2026 at CSCS in Lugano beside the Alps supercomputer (alps), with CSCS supplying power, cooling and security. IBM runs it on site under an initial three-year agreement through 2029; until then users reach IBM cloud systems. Nighthawk r2 is IBM's 120-qubit processor (see ibm-nighthawk). Installation had not been confirmed as complete in sources read in October 2026.
Spec sheet
Technical details as the builder or a paper states them, each with its own source. A blank is a fact we could not source, not a zero. Fidelity and coherence figures are in the benchmark table below.
| Spec | Value | Basis | Note | Source |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Processor | IBM Quantum Nighthawk r2, 120 programmable qubits | Vendor reported | IBM states more than 100,000 circuits per second, up to 25 times Heron throughput. | quantumcomputingreport.comstoragereview.com |
| Access and pricing | IBM operates on site; ETH Zurich coordinates access; initial three-year term to 2029 | Vendor reported | Hub members get IBM cloud systems before the Lugano machine is up. | storagereview.comquantumcomputingreport.com |
