Why this part
Gemini put two nodes behind each router and added hardware support for one-sided remote memory access, which is what made partitioned global address space languages usable at scale. Titan reused Jaguar's Gemini fabric unchanged when it added GPUs, and that is the reason the upgrade was affordable: the expensive, building-shaped part of a supercomputer is the network, and Oak Ridge did not touch it.
