Researched with AI assistance, checked by scripts. These rows were researched by AI agents reading public operator, laboratory and vendor sources, appended by scripts and checked by automated validation; no subject-matter expert has reviewed them (how this site is made). A mechanical second-reader pass has since fetched every cited source: 1350 of 1540 systems have a readable citation that names them, and 64 are genuinely weakly sourced. Every claim carries its source and a confidence tier. Treat anything below verified as a lead, not a citation.

What this machine is made of
One row per supplier relationship. “Supplier at build” is the company that shipped the part at the time; where that company has since been acquired, the parent it rolls up to today is shown beside it. That distinction is what makes ticker-level aggregation possible across a thirty-year dataset.

The read
Self-built Athlon MP cluster of Satoshi Matsuoka's laboratory at Tokyo Institute of Technology (now Institute of Science Tokyo), funded by the Japan Science and Technology Agency's PRESTO programme and the successor of PRESTO II, as described by the IPSJ Computer Museum. The museum gives 256 nodes with two 1.6 GHz Athlon MP CPUs each (512 CPUs) and 1.6 TFlop/s peak, while TOP500 lists 480 cores, Rpeak 1,536 GFlop/s and Rmax 716.1 GFlop/s on Myrinet under Linux, ranked 47th in June 2002, its only list appearance (https://www.top500.org/system/168742/). The two sources disagree on the core count and slightly on peak; TOP500 figures are used in the structured fields. TOP500 files the site as 'CII, Institute of Science Tokyo'. The museum calls it the second most powerful cluster in the world at the time and says its design experience fed later machines including TSUBAME.

Source check
We fetched this system's own citations and recorded whether each page actually mentions it. This is a corroboration signal, not a fact check, and it is published so you can see how well the sourcing holds up rather than take it on trust.
