JUPSI
JUPSI is a quantum annealing quantum computer operated by Forschungszentrum Julich in Germany. It has 4,400 physical qubits. It ranks 1 of 3 annealing machines in this table by physical qubit count. 12 sourced specs are in the spec sheet. No benchmark figures are recorded for it yet.
Also known as JUelich Pioneer for Spin Interference, D-Wave Advantage at JUNIQ
D-Wave annealer at the Julich Supercomputing Centre, hosted from 2022 and purchased outright by Forschungszentrum Julich in 2025, making it the first HPC centre to own a D-Wave Advantage system. The JUNIQ page lists more than 4,400 qubits after the Advantage2 upgrade (the 2025 purchase release cited more than 5,000 for the earlier chip), so 4400 is a lower bound. Julich announced a coupling to JUPITER and calls it the first coupling of an annealer to an exascale machine; the sources used do not confirm it is complete. A second system, JUPSI-2, was installed in 2026.
Co-located supercomputer: JUPITER. This machine is integrated with, or hosted beside, that system.
Spec sheet
Technical details as the builder or a paper states them, each with its own source. A blank is a fact we could not source, not a zero. Fidelity and coherence figures are in the benchmark table below.
| Spec | Value | Basis | Note | Source |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Processor | D-Wave Advantage2 QPU (JUPSI-1 upgraded from Advantage in 2025) | Independent | JUNIQ says JUPSI-1 was acquired in 2024 and upgraded in 2025 with an Advantage2 chip; the 2025 purchase release planned this upgrade. | fz-juelich.defz-juelich.de |
| Qubit type | Superconducting qubits (quantum annealer) | Independent | JUNIQ lists more than 4,400 superconducting qubits. | fz-juelich.de |
| Topology | Zephyr graph, 20 couplers per qubit (Advantage2 family) | Vendor reported | D-Wave documentation gives degree 20 for Zephyr; the JUNIQ page lists 15-way connectivity, which matches the older Pegasus graph, so the JUNIQ figure looks inconsistent with an Advantage2 chip. | docs.dwavequantum.comfz-juelich.de |
| Max connectivity | 20 | Vendor reported | Family value for Advantage2 Zephyr from D-Wave docs; JUNIQ lists 15-way, see topology note. | docs.dwavequantum.comfz-juelich.de |
| Couplers | 40,000 | Independent | JUNIQ lists more than 40,000 couplers, so 40000 is a lower bound. | fz-juelich.de |
| Cooling and environment | Cryogenic, low-magnetic-field environment in vibration-free JUNIQ facility | Vendor reported | D-Wave docs say QPUs run at cryogenic temperatures in a low-magnetic-field environment (family-level); JUNIQ describes the purpose-built vibration-free facility. No temperature figure was found. | docs.dwavequantum.comfz-juelich.de |
| Software | Ocean SDK (D-Wave open-source tools) | Vendor reported | D-Wave names the Ocean SDK for its annealing systems generally; the JUNIQ page was not found to name SDKs for JUPSI. | dwavequantum.com |
| Cloud platforms | JUNIQ cloud, operated as D-Wave Leap European node | Independent | JUNIQ became Europe first D-Wave Leap cloud site in 2019 and offers peer-reviewed sovereign cloud access to JUPSI-1. | fz-juelich.de |
| Access and pricing | Owned by Forschungszentrum Julich; peer-reviewed access through JUNIQ | Independent | Purchased outright in 2025; no price published. | fz-juelich.defz-juelich.de |
| Predecessor | D-Wave Advantage chip in JUPSI-1 (hosted since 2022) | Independent | The system kept its name when the Advantage2 chip replaced the earlier chip in 2025. | fz-juelich.de |
| Successor | JUPSI-2 (second Advantage2 system, installed 2026) | Independent | JUNIQ says JUPSI-2 was installed in 2026 to ensure production-grade access. | fz-juelich.de |
| Roadmap | Planned coupling of the annealer to the JUPITER exascale system | Independent | Announced in the 2025 purchase release; the pages do not confirm it is complete. | fz-juelich.defz-juelich.de |
