Intel Xeon X5670

6-core Xeon host processor in Tianhe-1A.

Why this part

Ordinary Westmere server silicon, and its presence in Tianhe-1A is the fact that most retellings of that machine get wrong. The first Chinese system to lead the world ran on American CPUs and American GPUs; what was domestic was the fabric. Read as a supply chain rather than a spec string, Tianhe-1A shows exactly where a national programme starts when it cannot yet make the compute: it starts with the network, because that is the layer where the incumbents were weakest and where a custom design could beat what was purchasable.

“Units recorded” sums only the edges where a public source states a quantity. It is a floor, not a total, and should never be read as installed base.
