Intel Paragon 2D mesh
2D mesh with torus wraparound, inherited from the Touchstone Delta rather than the hypercube of the earlier iPSC/860.
Why this part
The Paragon abandoned the hypercube used in Intel's earlier iPSC/860 for a flat 2D grid, on the reasoning that most physical simulation is itself a grid and that neighbours in the problem should be neighbours in the machine. A hypercube has better worst-case distance; a mesh is cheaper, wires more easily and matches the traffic that actually occurs. The message-passing hardware sat on the i860/XP die itself, so the fabric needed no separate adapter.

“Units recorded” sums only the edges where a public source states a quantity. It is a floor, not a total, and should never be read as installed base.
