Huawei Ascend 910

Huawei's training accelerator and the only non-Western part in volume production for large-model training. Its existence is why the domestic-substitution question in China is now about the accelerator layer rather than only the CPU and fabric.

Why this part

The most important non-Western AI accelerator, and the centre of the substitution question. Design is not the constraint: Ascend is competitive on paper. Fabrication is, because the May 2019 Entity List addition and the September 2020 foreign direct product rule cut HiSilicon off from leading-edge capacity at TSMC, and domestic capacity at SMIC is a generation or more behind. Any honest reading of Chinese AI compute turns on how much of this part can actually be made, not on how good it is.

“Units recorded” sums only the edges where a public source states a quantity. It is a floor, not a total, and should never be read as installed base.
