Why this part
An ANSI standard from the early 1990s originally built for supercomputer-to-storage links, repurposed here as the node interconnect joining Blue Mountain's Origin 2000 clusters into one TOP500 entry. It was already an older technology by 1998, superseded industry-wide within a few years by proprietary fabrics like Quadrics QsNet and later InfiniBand.
