Panasas ActiveScale (PanFS)
Object-storage blades with client-side parity computation rather than a central RAID controller. Roadrunner's parallel file system.
Why this part
Los Alamos' own 2008 storage-conference presentation describes Roadrunner's file system as Panasas blades organized into shelves of one metadata director and ten storage blades, with RAID 5 or RAID 10 computed per object by the client rather than by a central controller, roughly 100 shelves deployed. An independent 2007 trade-press report on the same procurement corroborates the vendor and product name. Panasas rebranded as VDURA in 2024; the company that built this system and the company that exists today are the same private entity under a new name.

“Units recorded” sums only the edges where a public source states a quantity. It is a floor, not a total, and should never be read as installed base.
