Why this part
The only x86 server part ever shipped with HBM on the package, and Intel's attempt to answer A64FX without giving up DDR capacity: run entirely out of 64GB of high-bandwidth memory when the problem fits, fall back to DDR5 when it does not. Aurora uses 21,248 of them. The part did not survive as a product line, which makes Aurora one of the very few machines in this dataset whose host CPU has no successor: a supply-chain position with no second generation behind it is a different kind of risk from one with a competitor.
