Fujitsu VPP500 crossbar

Full crossbar between vector processing elements. A crossbar rather than a torus, which is why the machine scaled in the hundreds rather than the thousands.

Why this part

A full crossbar gives every processor a direct path to every other with no hops and no contention, which is the best network you can build and the one that scales worst: the switch grows with the square of the port count. That is why the Numerical Wind Tunnel topped the list with 140 processors rather than thousands. Fujitsu could afford perfection because the machine was small, and everyone who wanted more processors had to give it up.

“Units recorded” sums only the edges where a public source states a quantity. It is a floor, not a total, and should never be read as installed base.
