Parts/CPUs/AMD Opteron 2435 (Istanbul)
Why this part
Jaguar's Cray XT5 partition was upgraded from four-core to six-core parts in the autumn of 2009, which took the machine to 1.759 petaflops and the top of the November list. The upgrade is the interesting part: the socket, the board and the SeaStar2+ fabric all stayed, and performance rose by half. Buying a machine whose processors can be replaced without replacing the system around them is a procurement decision as much as an engineering one.

“Units recorded” sums only the edges where a public source states a quantity. It is a floor, not a total, and should never be read as installed base.
