Researched with AI assistance, checked by scripts. These rows were researched by AI agents reading public operator, laboratory and vendor sources, appended by scripts and checked by automated validation; no subject-matter expert has reviewed them (how this site is made). A mechanical second-reader pass has since fetched every cited source: 1350 of 1540 systems have a readable citation that names them, and 64 are genuinely weakly sourced. Every claim carries its source and a confidence tier. Treat anything below verified as a lead, not a citation.

What this machine is made of

One row per supplier relationship. “Supplier at build” is the company that shipped the part at the time; where that company has since been acquired, the parent it rolls up to today is shown beside it. That distinction is what makes ticker-level aggregation possible across a thirty-year dataset.

The read

Sun Fire x2200 and x4600 Opteron cluster operated by the Arctic Region Supercomputing Center of the University of Alaska. Its only TOP500 entry (November 2007, 206th) shows 2,236 cores of 2.6 GHz dual-core Opteron on InfiniBand under SUSE Linux Enterprise Server 9, 8.86 TFlop/s Rmax, 12.02 peak and Nmax 760,000. A March 2010 University of Alaska release names 'a 2,312-processor Sun Opteron cluster called Midnight' running alongside a 3,456-core Cray XT5 called Pingo, with a larger Cray system being acquired, which shows Midnight still in service in March 2010 and is the status date used here; its processor count differs from TOP500's 2,236 cores and the release does not say why. The release does not give an installation date, so 2007 is TOP500's install year.

We fetched this system's own citations and recorded whether each page actually mentions it. This is a corroboration signal, not a fact check, and it is published so you can see how well the sourcing holds up rather than take it on trust.
