Why this part
Roughly twice the bandwidth of the InfiniBand generation available in 2010, and the only part of Tianhe-1A that was not American. That is the detail most retellings miss and the one that matters most: a national programme that cannot yet make the processors starts with the network, because that is where the incumbents were weakest and where a custom design could beat what was purchasable. Read as a supply chain, Tianhe-1A is the first visible move in a substitution programme that reached the compute layer six years later.
