NEC SUPER-UX

NEC's own Unix-based OS for the SX vector line, enhanced specifically for the Earth Simulator's 640-node Super-Cluster System.

Why this part

JAMSTEC's own operations page states directly that SUPER-UX was enhanced for the Earth Simulator in two ways: extending scalability to the full 640-processor-node system, and adding features specific to the machine's two-level Super-Cluster System, 40 clusters of 16 nodes each. This is the operator's own account of its software, the strongest source tier this dataset uses, but we found no second independent organisation that names the OS. A NEC R&D paper describing the same Super-Cluster architecture in detail, used elsewhere for this system's storage and cooling facts, never uses the string "Super-UX" in the pages we could extract text from, so this fact stays at reported rather than verified despite the source quality.

“Units recorded” sums only the edges where a public source states a quantity. It is a floor, not a total, and should never be read as installed base.
