Intel Xeon E5540

4-core Xeon at 2.53GHz, the majority host processor in the original Tianhe-1.

Why this part

One of two Xeon models, with the older E5450, in Tianhe-1's 2009 configuration, before the machine was rebuilt a year later as Tianhe-1A with Westmere CPUs, NVIDIA GPUs and NUDT's own Arch interconnect. Nehalem was the first Xeon generation with an on-die memory controller and QPI, part of why late 2009 is roughly when x86 hosts paired with GPUs first reached the TOP500 top five.
