Intel Xeon E5-2692 v2

12-core Xeon, two per node in Tianhe-2 alongside three Xeon Phi cards.

Why this part

A custom SKU: the 2692 was not a catalogue part but a bin Intel produced for Tianhe-2, clocked down from the standard Ivy Bridge-EP line to fit the machine's power envelope across 32,000 sockets. Vendor price lists show the parts anyone can buy; the parts that actually appear in the largest machines are frequently negotiated. Tianhe-2 is also the system that made the point about supply risk concrete: the US Entity List addition of April 2015 blocked the planned Xeon Phi upgrade, and the replacement was NUDT's domestic Matrix-2000.
