Intel ASCI Red mesh

Custom two-dimensional mesh built by Intel's Supercomputer Systems Division, which was shut down shortly after.

Why this part

Custom silicon under commodity processors, which is the shape almost every large machine has taken since. ASCI Red's contribution was not the topology but the demonstration that you could buy the expensive part of a supercomputer, the arithmetic, off a price list and spend your engineering budget on the part nobody sells: the network. Every Cray fabric on this site is a descendant of that division of labour.

“Units recorded” sums only the edges where a public source states a quantity. It is a floor, not a total, and should never be read as installed base.
