Why this part
Six dimensions, of which three are a conventional torus and three are a small local mesh, so the machine can be partitioned into independent 3D-torus-shaped jobs without any of them sharing wires. That is an operations decision rather than a performance one: the K computer served many users at once, and a topology that guarantees a job's network is its own removes the largest source of unpredictable run times on a shared machine.
