Fujitsu SPARC64 VIIIfx

8-core SPARC64 that made the K computer the first 10-petaflop machine.

Why this part

Codenamed Venus, and built around a target of performance per watt at a time when the rest of the industry was still buying performance per socket. 58 watts for 128 GFlop/s made the K computer the most efficient machine in the world at its scale, and it needed to be: 88,128 of them at any higher power draw would not have fitted the site's electrical supply. Fujitsu also kept it a single-socket design with no accelerator, so every one of K's 705,024 cores ran the same code with no host-device split at all, which is why applications ported to it almost immediately.

“Units recorded” sums only the edges where a public source states a quantity. It is a floor, not a total, and should never be read as installed base.
