ATI Radeon HD 4870 X2

Dual-GPU card, two RV770 chips on one board, used as Tianhe-1's compute accelerator.

Why this part

Tianhe-1 was among the first top-five TOP500 systems built around commodity graphics silicon rather than a purpose-built accelerator, ahead of NVIDIA Fermi becoming the industry's default choice. AMD's ATI-branded desktop gaming part was deployed at a scale, 2,560 cards, no consumer product line was designed for, and the choice did not survive Tianhe-1's own next generation: Tianhe-1A switched to NVIDIA Tesla GPUs within a year.
