Parts/CPUs/AMD Opteron 2210 (Santa Rosa)
Why this part
The quiet half of Roadrunner. Each of these dual-core Opterons acted as a host for an IBM PowerXCell 8i doing the actual arithmetic, an arrangement that read as bizarre in 2008 and as completely standard by 2018. The first petaflop machine was heterogeneous, and its host CPU was chosen for exactly the reasons host CPUs are chosen now: run the operating system, feed the accelerator, and stay out of the way.

“Units recorded” sums only the edges where a public source states a quantity. It is a floor, not a total, and should never be read as installed base.
